Most disease in this country was wiped out by modern sanitation practices. Closed sewers, sewage treatment, water treatment, reduction of standing water sources, vaccinations, Food purity standards all slashed disease. The 19th century was a constant battle against cholera, dysentery, diptheria, polio, rubella,,,,
The tendency to fight public sector infrastructure improvements has been very shortsighted and the social conservatives and the battle against vaccines has been very short sighted.
The evangelical battle against vaccines will prove to be darwinian in it’s effects.
Quite right. However, it doesn’t take away from the fact that the modern “global village” world makes us more vulnerable to pandemic than at any time in history. The current minor (so far!) problem appears already to have spread to the USA, Canada, Scotland and New Zealand. Also, and of course it’s too early really to say, the mortality rate of this one appears to be unprecendented. It’s going to get nasty, and purely because nobody is going to take effective action before it’s too late.
