Something all too rare. I’m sure that they’ll be attacked for blasphemy, but Arizona State doesn’t think that the president has enough experience to entitle him to an honorary degree.
Gee, it’s nice to see someone pointing out the Emperor’s sartorial problems.
On the other hand, Obama is a sitting President, one of only 44 people to achieve that goal.
That doesn’t justify an honorary degree. It is not in any way an academic achievement. At least in traditional academics.
Perhaps, though, he could get an advanced honorary degree in semiotics and demagoguery from some postmodernist loony bin.
The responses to that story are unintentionally hilarious at times, and downright mind-boggling at other times. You’re right, though, about people attacking ASU for this decision. The old “He was a Senator and is now President” line is grasping at straws, because a) the majority of his stint as a U.S. Senator was spent running for the Presidency, and b) he hasn’t even made it past the arbitrary “first 100 days” as President yet. What the heck has he “accomplished” in those roles that is worth honoring with a degree?
And, as the article points out, there’s a strong possibility that he wasn’t even NOMINATED for an honorary degree. It’s not like they saw the nomination and turned it down.
What a non-story.
I can’t believe that article came out and said (in so many words) he deserves it because he’s black.
Maybe I deserve one because I’m fat?
