Yes, It’s Me

Sorry for the new look, but I haven’t had time to customize the template–I just grabbed one from the available themes.  And I suspect that I’ll never get it looking exactly like the old one–it was based on HTML tables with a primitive stylesheet–and this WordPress setup is entirely PHP/CSS driven.  But at a minimum I should be able to get the blogroll back up, and it should be much more functional now.  And I’ve always valued function over form.

Anyway, one more unhappy ex-MT customer.  I gave up on it when I realized that the documentation had not improved in any obvious way since I upgraded in January and found that it sucked like a Dyson.

Any comments left between now and yesterday afternoon didn’t get imported, so I’ll probably have to pick them up manually later.  It’s not a high priority.  Or maybe I’ll do another export, now that the old site isn’t functional any more, and no new comments will be coming in.

Anyway, welcome to the new place, with the same old proprietor.

Oh, and one nice immediate feature–as you can see, I now have good category pages up, so those who are interested in (e.g.) only the space, or only the politics posts, can now view them without the others.

  1. No need to apologize. It looks fine. Congratulations on the successful blog migration, and happy Thanksgiving.

  2. Congrats on the successful eject from MT. Much as I love perl, there’s always a time to move on.

At the risk of starting a “my CMS is better than your CMS” war, if your considering expanding to anything beyond a simple blog, you might have a look at http://drupal.org

as you add plug-ins for additional functionality to wordpress, it can become somewhat of a frankenstien.

Drupal on the other hand, is not quite as quick to get a basic blog up & running as wordpress is, but it’s extremely well architected for expantion to non-blog functions.

  3. Looks fairly good, but I must say that I found myself staring dazed and confused for a few seconds when I first brought up the site today, before I scrolled to read this post.

  4. Gosh, pretty blue clouds.

Now let’s see if the comment button works….oh, and while we’re at it, a little HTML plus the odd 6·7 alias.

  5. Everything seems to work, although the rel= in the headers only has rss2 for the subscription. I edited the link to “http://www.transterrestrial.com/?feed=atom”, and that worked to provide a feed. So, it’s just something missing in header.php. My own blog uses this:

    <link rel=”alternate” type=”application/atom+xml” title=”Atom 0.3″ href=”” />

  6. Congrats on the upgrade. I recently tried to move from MT2.6 to MT4, found the documentation an absolute mess, got in touch with someone at MT, who admitted that MT4 was indeed terrible.

In the end I moved to WordPress. Custom Themes are hard to figure out at first, but once it’s done it’s easy to switch them around.

  7. Maybe my eyes are tired, but can we get a font bump?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I hope the turkey was superb the pie plentiful.

  8. Maybe my eyes are tired, but can we get a font bump?

Maybe, but if you use Firefox, just control-scrollwheel to adjust the size (this works with any page). If you don’t use Firefox, sux to be you… 😉

  9. “If you don’t use Firefox, sux to be you…”

Now, Rand. If you use Opera, click on the magnifying glass and choose the size — and it works on images, too!

  10. Congratulations. I think you will like the move Rand. The CSS and PHP code are easy to customize. You will find though,if you format posts with HTML commands Word press likes to make the formatting go away.

Change one or two things a day and I bet you will find in a month you rarely change anything any more.

The photo in the header file is one of the easiest things to change. Good luck on getting it all as you want it and I am glad your frustration level will be going down.

  11. Fine job overall. I know the old site was becoming such a pain, once you get the move complete, you’ll be able to spend more time on non-admin categories.

I have to agree with the commenters regarding font size (and, yes, I know about changing font sizes in Firefox). It’s just a suggestion. That would be one less thing for me to do as I read your commentary. Helps to focus on the message instead of the style.

  12. Hurrah! And I found out less than a week after it happened. Sadly, I’d found the MT4 site almost as hard to read as Rand was finding it to run. This is a vast improvement.
