New Orleans is now a potential (but still unlikely) landfall, but Rita may be headed for Houston. It’s right in the cross hairs at the NOAA site. This can’t be good for oil futures, either.

Yup, oil prices are up three bucks.
Do we really have the capability to deflect smaller asteroids (ones that are large enough to make it through the atmosphere, but small enough to not wipe out everything but cockroaches)? Sure, we’ve seen the movies where we can just nuke them, but do we have the technology to even get the warhead to the path of an object moving thousands of miles per hour through space, far enough away from Earth to make a difference?
